Ah, thank you for sharing this lovely and emotional memory! It resonates with me so much-- a sequestered adolescence, the need to travel and be creative, the yearning to find your "person." But patience, an openness to new ideas and curiousity of the world can lead to amazing things. I am now an anthropologist, married to a French guy and we have two amazing kids 😆 Remember to remind your kids that even the boring bits are an essential part of your life's evolution.
Ahhhh, this was really evocative and sweet / funny (sorry, young you!) Thinking of the joints at the end, isn’t it interesting how we turn to ‘vices’ as rebellion / in frustration / anger. I’m looking back a lot lately at why I for decades sporadically binge drank, when it made me feel sooooo bad! (I finally - thankfully - stopped doing it, the last two years have brought about a lot of self-knowledge / spiritual growth for me, which am grateful for) - I’ve been thinking about if it was a response to something , I mean something more than just the standard inbuilt British drinking culture thing. Nice to see you on Substack - it feels like a nice and unusually slow, quiet place to be.
Yes, sinister, and I suspect it’s a sign of malaise and repression (etc) in a whole nation as well as a very, very bad way of dealing with personal shit! However, the film Druk (Another Round) - Danish - is a really, really interesting take on it.
